Letters from Henrietta: Day 1

Dear Mom,

For some reason, the farmer put us in separate pens today.  Me and my siblings are in the same pen with these other calves that showed up a couple days ago.  You and your sisters are in a different pen.  I can't figure out why, so I thought I'd write you letters while we are apart.

At first, I didn't notice that we were in different pens until I got done eating.   Then I heard you calling for me.  I then tried to find a way out of our pen and into yours.  There was one spot near the feed bunk where we had all dug out around the concrete and Rowdy and I were going to tunnel under the steel fence there.  Unfortunately, the farmer showed up with that orange thing and dumped a bunch of dirt where we had dug it out.

We had great fun playing in the pile of dirt afterwards though!  Rowdy and I put our heads together after our evening visit to the feed bunk to try to find another way out of our pen, but we ended up just licking flies off each other and forgot about getting out.

The food is great here!  I am missing one thing though... oh yeah!  Milk!  Are you going to come visit soon?

The farmer came to check on us tonight and Edwin and Hope had to hide the ladder they had grabbed from the barn when they got out a while ago.  Hope scooted it behind the water trough with a hoof and ran to the other end of the feedlot to distract him.  I think it worked.  We'll set the ladder up tonight, but we aren't sure if any of us can climb it.

One of the steers started a fly swatting contest.  It's a lot of fun!  Unfortunately, none of us can count higher than four so we always end up in a tie.

I noticed the steel tube gates the farmer uses to separate the pens have some rust on them.  I'll kick them a few times tonight to see if I can find any weaknesses.

Love you!

Henrietta

P.S.  Please tell your sisters not to moo so loudly; it disturbs the other calves over here and it's embarrassing.
